“A really wonderful adventure!” was the first thought that the Florentine entrepreneur Niccolò Donzelli had when the members of the TOCCAFONDI firm proposed that, through the Nest Investimenti holding, he take over their firm precisely on the occasion of its first one hundred years of activity.
The Graphic Arts workshop was founded around 1880 in Borgo San Lorenzo, but was taken over very soon by the Toccafondi family, who managed the business for three generations with love and enthusiasm for this ancient profession. The printing of books, magazines and journals throughout the Mugello is officially demonstrated by several documents which bear the date of 1910: hence the choice of the “Graphic Arts since 1910” claim, despite the fact that the business is even older.
The young Florentine entrepreneur undoubtedly remained impressed by the bond of affection that exists between the four partners and the firm and by the lack of heirs disposed to take up this entrepreneurial challenge. The business had always been managed with circumspection and precision; the accounts are in order; the warehouse and the offices belonging to the firm were bought over time with the firm’s profits. Everything seemed perfect, but a plan of continuity and new investments was necessary in order to be able to face the future with renewed optimism. Over the course of a century, printing and the graphic arts in general have witnessed an incredible evolution. The model of a traditional artisan business no longer allowed a business to grow and prosper. This was due to the always more competitive international market, the daily dumping on prices, the always more exorbitant cost of raw materials, as well as the constant evolution in technology of printing machines. Therefore, investing in a mature sector might seem like romantic foolishness. Niccolò Donzelli, however, was well acquainted with this sector, as he had dealt for years with his own enterprises, with communications, images, graphics, design, and advertising – at the beginning with advertising agencies and then, in recent years, alongside Oliviero Toscani as his administrator and general manager.
The challenge in the long-standing Mugello printing shop is interesting and stimulating. The old partners will continue to collaborate, together with the personnel, special young people who never spare themselves, until the generational turnover has been completed and the know-how has been expertly transferred. Numerous investments have already been made in the innovation process and in the computerisation of the production cycle. Several new employees and collaborators have been inserted in the administrative, printing, pre-press, and graphics areas. In fact, there is a desire to reorganise the business model that will witness the firm divided into departments: printing (a traditional small printing shop and commercial printing), pre-press (photolithography and business-to-business service), and the new graphics, design and consultancy department. The Toccafondi firm will work, therefore, as a traditional printing shop on commission for businesses, graphics studios and agencies, but will also offer a 360° complete service, including within itself all the competencies of the distribution chain, from photography and design to the final paper-transformation product. We are thus no longer just a production company; we also want to be a firm at the service of clients in its entire promotion and image process.
